Centre for Studies in Rural Education I think the time is right for the Faculty to establish a Centre for Studies in Rural Education. There are several such centres in the US and a few in Australia. There are none in Canada. Such a centre would be an important step forward for Newfoundland and Labrador. It would send a clear signal to the people of the province that the university recognizes the significant number of rural schools in the province and is committed to working on their behalf. Such a centre would provide a focus and meeting place for all those with an interest in pursuing research and development work in rural education studies. One very important role for such a centre could be to develop a data base of information about rural schools in this province which would be available to any faculty member or graduate student who wished to develop a research project in rural studies. Another function of such a centre would be the compilation of both local, national and international resources specifically related to rural education. Such sources would include both published materials and electronic links and resources. Establishing connections with rural education scholars and other rural research and development centres world wide would also be part of the proposed centre's agenda.
